Moment Of Truth

my boyfriend purchased all my books for this semester so i can invest in a nice camera--i know!! isn't he an absolute sweetheart? anyhoo...i've been looking at a few different choices:

the first one i was looking at was the canon powershot (left)...
or the sony cybershot (right)... they're pretty similar in terms of what they offer.

my boyfriend proposed we go a step further and just buy a really high quality camera. nothing too crazy though. so we were looking at this nikon coolpix camera below.

are you any of you really experienced with cameras? any advice?
i could really use it!!

  1. I would suggest you go with a DSLR instead of a point and shoot camera. They are a touch pricier, starting at about $500 but they're deffinitly worth it. From my own experience, I've gone through a lot of the tiny PAS cameras and after a year or two, they're garbage, whereas a DSLR will last you much longer than that. Furthermore, as a blogger, it would offer you the ability to take higher quality pictures, and play around with focus, etc. You should check out the Canon rebel or Olympus pan. Good luck!

  2. I definitely recommend looking at the optical zoom and lens size in addition to mega pixels because it affects the photo quality when there are too many megapixels for the lens size. So it'd be great to look into cameras with detachable/changeable lenses if you want really professional photos. My camera is a digital point and shoot and not a fancy DSLR but it's on the higher end of the point and shoots- a Panasonic Lumix (mine is the DMC-ZS7 but mine has some unnecessary features like a gps haha). I'd definitely recommend checking it out- it has a really great optical zoom so the lens expands pretty far. DSLRs are nice too but I can totally understand if one is out of your price range at the moment as a college student.

  3. they are a tad more expensive than this, but i would definitely go a nikon DSLR. you won't regret it. i have a nikon d90 and its more than i could have ever wanted in a camera. yes, a lot more expensive but DSLRs are definitely of a much higher quality than compacts. i'd wait it out, save a little and get a camera which you'll be happy with for the next ten years.

  4. Mine is the point and shoot canon ixus. Yep, pretty much hopeless in photography. But it's red and thus so pretty hahhaha..

While I love trotting my camera around just because it's small and take good pictures (compared to other point and shoot) and pretty (have i told u it was red?), nothing beats a DSLR, hands down. Even when I carefully set my camera, taking into account lights, position etc, it can easily beaten down by clumsily photo taken by a DSLR.

So my 2 cents is definitely get the nikon (or canon, I'm biased you see) DSLR and promise you won't regret it.

  6. Hey girl! New cameras are super exciting! I got a Nikon DSLR D60 about 2 years back and I love it. I have to use pretty high quality cameras (like Nikon D3000) for work and they can get annoying with all the settings, but the D60 is a sweet camera for beginners. The manual is so well written and easy to understand. Yes it is a bit pricey, but seriously once you buy one of these you won't have to upgrade for a loooong time - if at all. And you can always purchase extra lenses if you want to switch it up. I got mine for a great deal during a Christmas sale and it was the best decision I made (I was going to just update to another point-and-shoot). If you want a point and shoot camera, then go for a Luminex with intelligent auto feature. These are amazing cameras (500$) but they take the best pictures and are really easy to use - the camera does all the work for you. I hope this helps and that I am not just rambling!!! :) Good luck camera shopping!
