During our last photography sessions before graduation, Mahria showed me this gorgeous gem of a book. In
Enchanted Jewelry of Egypt by Azza Fahmy we explore the societal meaning and variation of jewelry within different parts of Egypt. It also chronicles the evolution of jewelry over a one hundred year period. It's amazing to read about the symbolism behind different pieces.
Azza Fahmy doubles as a world-renowned jewelry designer and also takes the reader into the production of these pieces. Here are some of my favorites....
The fish ornament below (presumably part of a necklace) caught my attention for it's stunning detail. I imagine fish have historically symbolized prosperity; after all the Nile is the source of so much sustenance for that region. I also just love fish!

"A rare ring made in 1900 from 950-carat silver" This also struck me for it's sense of modernity. It's interesting to see so many contemporary designs drawing upon past jewelry production. I've seen similar rings on so many blogs!
Allan had such a hard time photographing us; we can never keep straight faces in our photos!
And to appropriately end this post, here's my name is Arabic: ياسمين
